1. Introduction |
| |
Alternative tourism offers a coherent radical critique of current social, political, and environmental problems as well as a reconstructive, ecological, communitarian, and ethical approach to society. Environmental problems are fundamentally viewed as social and political, and seek systemic, long-term solutions, in contrast to the incremental policy adjustments generally advocated by the large NGOs. Therefore, fundamental changes are advocated in political, economic and social systems, envisioning an outlook that re-harmonizes human communities with the natural world, while celebrating diversity, creativity and freedom within human communities.
New tourism underlines the paradigm that tourism needs to be moved from practices that are marked by insensitivity, inequity and short-term maximisation to a broader vision which recognises long – term obligation to travellers, destinations, wider communities and future generations. The ground realities today in front of us are many like increasing tensions between East and West, a growing gap between Have and Have – not regions of the world, global warming, a deteriorating environment and an increase in terrorism. The tourism industry cannot isolate itself from the problems that the world is facing today – poverty, exploitation, intolerance, greed, destruction of nature, ethnic collisions etc. The planet is groaning under the weight of non-sustainable poorly considered tourism. Therefore, a proactive understanding of how smart and sustainable tourism systems can be developed benefitting all of us is the call for the day. There is a need to implement various measures which require understanding of world cultures, human psychology, religion, politics, energy resources, water and nature conservation, waste management, cross – cultural mediation and more. Vibrant research and development into this concept would have such tremendous potential to foster innovation, workable solutions and new agendas that can barely be imagined what the future would hold.

Conference Focus |
| |
| |
The theme of the conference builds on the ideology that emphasises the social, cultural, economic, educational and political values of tourism. There are signs of a new global paradigm struggling to be born. A new paradigm that seeks an end to fossil energy and a resultant stabilizing effect on global warming is in the offing. A paradigm with a strong environmental ethic that restores ecological balance in the world, which brings an end to poverty and to war, being used as a means of solving conflict. As it is only through a global family at peace with itself and a paradigm of collaboration at all levels and by all sectors of society, that we can solve the unprecedented global issues facing our one common home and our one common future as a global family.
Academicians, research scholars, senior management, writers, editors, consultants, administrators, historians, tourism lawyers, politicians, clergymen, landscape architects, environmentalists, urban designers and professionals are invited to submit papers on the main theme in the context of Sustainable tourism, Geo-tourism, Heritage and Cultural tourism, Community based tourism, Peace tourism, Pro-poor and Philanthropic tourism, Volunteer tourism and others. The focus of the research papers/case studies can be with respect to industry such as travel and tour operations, destination management, accommodation, transportation, capacity building, infrastructure, entertainment and recreation, cuisine or any of the combination.

About Jammu |
| |
| |
Jammu, the duggar land where the past still has a living presence. A land of great ancient temples, and beautiful palaces, all nestling in the foothills of the Himalayas. It is said that, on becoming the King, Suryavanshi Jambu Lochan went on a hunt and, crossing the Tawi, found a deer and a tiger drinking water from the same tank. His ministers explained that this meant that the soil of the place was so virtuous that no living creature bore enmity against another. Raja Jambu Lochan, who lived in the later vedic period, decided to found his capital, Jambupura, on this soil, on the right bank of the Tawi, overlooking his brother king Bahu’s fort. Today the temple of Maha Kali (better known as Bahu or Bawey Wali Mata), located in the Bahu Fort, is considered second only to Mata Vaishno Devi in terms of mystical powers. The present temple was built shortly after the coronation of Maharaja Gulab Singh, in 1822. The existing fort, as well as the Manasabdar’s palace inside it, was constructed in 1820. Jammu is justly famous for its temples. In fact, it is known as the city of temples and the every fame of its tends to overshadow its palaces, forts, forests, and powerful ziarats. If Bahu Mata is the presiding deity of Jammu, the Dargah of Peer Budhan Ali Shah is the other shrine that protects Jammuites. The other major tourist attraction is the Raghunath Temple Complex. Maharaja Gulab Singh began the construction of the Raghunath Mandir Complex in the crowded downtown Bazaar named after it, in 1851
